How’d That Get There?

Proverbs 6:16-19

Proverbs 6:16–19 (NIV): 16 There are six things the LORD hates,

seven that are detestable to him:

         17haughty eyes,

         a lying tongue,

         hands that shed innocent blood,

18a heart that devises wicked schemes,

feet that are quick to rush into evil,

19a false witness who pours out lies

and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.

  1. Looking down on others (pride)
  2. Spreading misinformation (manipulative deception)
  3. Validates anger (violence) even when someone is innocent (literally and figuratively)
  4. Make schemes and plots against someone (evil intention)
  5. Quick to validate wrongs (willful sin)
  6. Spreading information that hurts someone (slander)
  7. Stirs up conflict (divisive)

The first 6 are the things people do that God absolutely HATES. The last one is the BIGGEST one.

  1. Matthew 23:12 (ESV): 12 Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
  2. John 8:44 (NLT): 44 For you are the children of your father the devil, and you love to do the evil things he does. He was a murderer from the beginning. He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies.

John 14:6 (NIV): 6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Matthew 5:37 (ESV): 37 Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.

  1. Matthew 5:21–22 (NLT): 21 “You have heard that our ancestors were told, ‘You must not murder. If you commit murder, you are subject to judgment.’ 22 But I say, if you are even angry with someone, you are subject to judgment! If you call someone an idiot, you are in danger of being brought before the court. And if you curse someone, you are in danger of the fires of hell.
  2. Matthew 15:19 (NIV): 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.
  3. Hebrews 10:26–27 (NLT): 26 Dear friends, if we deliberately continue sinning after we have received knowledge of the truth, there is no longer any sacrifice that will cover these sins. 27 There is only the terrible expectation of God’s judgment and the raging fire that will consume his enemies.
  4. Matthew 5:9 (NIV): 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
