The Ol’ Man and the New Man
Romans 8:1-9

Old Man = Carnal Man

Carnal—G4559,sarkikos from sarx, flesh, signifies (a)”having the nature of flesh,” i.e. sensual, controlled by animal appetites,governed by human nature 1

Carnally—G4560, sarkinos (a) “consisting of flesh, (b) “pertaining to the natural, transient life to the body, (c) given up to the flesh.” 2

Three things about the Ol’Man:

     1.  Can’t obey the law!

            a. Romans 8:3
                  i.  Romans 3:19-20
                  ii.  Galatians 2:19

                 iii.  Ephesians 2:15
                  iv.  Hebrews 7:19

      2.  Can’t control our bodies!

            a.  Romans 8:4
                   i.  John 6:26
                  ii.  Romans 7:23
                  iii.  Galatians 5:13
                  iv.  1 John 2:16

      3.  Can’t Control our minds!
            a. Romans 8:5,7
                  i.  Titus 1:15

                  ii. Colossians 2:18
                  iii. Ephesians 4:17

                   iv. Romans 1:28

Ol’ Man is condemned to death, both physically and

      spiritually.

New Man = Presence of the Holy Spirit.

Three Things about the New Man:

      1.  God helps to obey the law!

            a.  Romans 8:3-4

                   i.  Matthew 5:20

                   ii. 1 Corinthians 15:34

                  iii. Philippians 1:11

                   iv.  Hosea 10:12

      2.  Helps us control our bodies!

            a.  Romans 8:13

                  i.  Romans 15:1

                  ii. Galatians 5:24

                 iii. Colossians 3:5

                  iv.  Romans 13:14

                   v.  1 Peter 4:2

      3.  Helps control our minds!

            a,  Romans 8:6

                   i. 1 Corinthians 2:16

                  ii. Philippians 2:5

                  iii. Romans 12:3

                    iv. Philippians 4:8

                   v. Psalm 143:5

The Law could never save us from ourselves, only Jesus gave us the possibility to do so.  In a battle of wills, the Ol’ Man must die so that the New Man can live!  While we recognize that Satan and other dark forces are at war over our souls, the biggest enemy will always be ourselves!
