What covers you?

In biblical Hebrew, Jez- (or Yizr) comes from zara, meaning “to sow” or “scatter seed”.

Jezreel (Yizre’el): Means “God sows” or “God will sow,” referencing the fertile valley and symbolically representing God spreading or scattering the people.[1]

Jezebel (Izeḇel): Jezebel is an Anglicized form of the Phoenician name Izeḇel or Jezebaal. Hebrew speakers may have treated the final part as zebel (“dung” or “trash”), making it a pejorative term. Her name likely originally meant “Where is the Prince?” or “Exalted of Baal,” referring to her Phoenician god, Baal. Biblical authors often utilized a wordplay changing the sound of her name from baal (lord) to zebel (used for trash/dung), turning her name into a term of contempt.[2]

While “Jez” in Jezreel implies the active, creative sowing of God, “Jez” (or properly the -zebel suffix) in Jezebel represents the pagan “prince” or Baal worship that was being challenged.[3]

1 Peter 2:4–10 (NLT): 4 You are coming to Christ, who is the living cornerstone of God’s temple. He was rejected by people, but he was chosen by God for great honor.

5 And you are living stones that God is building into his spiritual temple. What’s more, you are his holy priests. Through the mediation of Jesus Christ, you offer spiritual sacrifices that please God. 6 As the Scriptures say,

    “I am placing a cornerstone in Jerusalem,

      chosen for great honor,

    and anyone who trusts in him

      will never be disgraced.”

7 Yes, you who trust him recognize the honor God has given him. But for those who reject him,

    “The stone that the builders rejected

      has now become the cornerstone.”

8 And,

    “He is the stone that makes people stumble,

      the rock that makes them fall.”

They stumble because they do not obey God’s word, and so they meet the fate that was planned for them.

9 But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.

    10 “Once you had no identity as a people;

      now you are God’s people.

    Once you received no mercy;

      now you have received God’s mercy.”

Malachi 2:1–9 (RSV): 1 “And now, O priests, this command is for you. 2 If you will not listen, if you will not lay it to heart to give glory to my name, says the LORD of hosts, then I will send the curse upon you and I will curse your blessings; indeed I have already cursed them, because you do not lay it to heart. 3 Behold, I will rebuke your offspring, and spread dung upon your faces, the dung of your offerings, and I will put you out of my presence. 4 So shall you know that I have sent this command to you, that my covenant with Levi may hold, says the LORD of hosts. 5 My covenant with him was a covenant of life and peace, and I gave them to him, that he might fear; and he feared me, he stood in awe of my name. 6 True instruction was in his mouth, and no wrong was found on his lips. He walked with me in peace and uprightness, and he turned many from iniquity. 7 For the lips of a priest should guard knowledge, and men should seek instruction from his mouth, for he is the messenger of the LORD of hosts. 8 But you have turned aside from the way; you have caused many to stumble by your instruction; you have corrupted the covenant of Levi, says the LORD of hosts, 9 and so I make you despised and abased before all the people, inasmuch as you have not kept my ways but have shown partiality in your instruction.”

Luke 13:6–9 (ESV): 6 And he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it and found none. 7 And he said to the vinedresser, ‘Look, for three years now I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and I find none. Cut it down. Why should it use up the ground?’ 8 And he answered him, ‘Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and put on manure. 9 Then if it should bear fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.’ ”
